South Korea Launches Top-Tier Visa to Attract Global Tech Talent
South Korea’s newly launched Top-Tier Visa program is opening doors for elite technology professionals worldwide. Designed to attract high-caliber talent in cutting-edge industries such as semiconductors, biotechnology, secondary batteries, and display technologies, the initiative is part of Seoul’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the global tech race.
The visa targets foreign professionals with exceptional academic and corporate credentials. Eligibility typically requires a master’s or doctoral degree from one of the world’s top 100 universities, combined with either:
- At least eight years of professional experience, including three years at a Fortune Global 500 company, or
- A PhD and five years of research experience, including at least three years at a leading global research institute.
Applicants must also have an employment contract with a Korean company and meet a minimum annual income threshold of KRW 149.865 million—three times South Korea’s per capita Gross National Income (GNI). Individuals earning more than KRW 199.82 million annually (four times the GNI) can bypass the academic and experience requirements altogether.
Successful applicants are granted F-2 resident status, allowing them and their families to live and work freely in South Korea. The visa offers a clear path to permanent residency after three years and includes benefits like family sponsorship and expedited immigration services through an Immigration VIP Card.
Depending on early program outcomes, eligibility may be broadened to include individuals holding a bachelor’s degree from one of the world’s top 200 universities. Additionally, candidates with degrees from Korean universities or experience at Korean companies may qualify if they meet the same standards.
Top South Korean universities featured in the QS World Rankings include Seoul National University (31st), KAIST (53rd), Yonsei University (56th), Korea University (67th), and POSTECH (98th). Major Korean firms on the Forbes Global 2000 list include Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor, Kia, and POSCO.
Applications can be submitted at designated immigration offices or through the Ministry of Justice’s official website.
